Gallus Golf Loyalty Cards

Problem

Sometimes, you’re going about your business, and a lethal virus starts spreading like wildfire! Well, that’s what Gallus licensees were doing, and we knew we had to think fast to help out. A few features, like loyalty points and punch cards, require you to hand your phone over to a course employee to get your punch or redeem your loyalty reward. However, people weren’t feeling very comfortable allowing a stranger to handle their phone in April 2020. How can we make this a seamless and relatively autonomous experience for the golfer?

Gallus vision—putting the Club in the golfer’s pocket.

Research

Everyone at the company came together on this one. We talked with our licensees with the highest usage of loyalty programs and explored QR Codes, SKUs, and even POS system integrations. However, due to the vast number of unique systems and integrations each club might have, the fastest solution we could deliver ended up being a simple timestamp.

Exploration & Iteration

A QR Code or barcode of some kind that could be scanned seemed like a nice solution, but the variety of POS systems at the various clubs across the US and Canada made it difficult to find a solution that would work for all or even most.

We landed on a date/time stamp that the golfer could flash to the course staff and a time window for how long it would display.

Animation

Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! I prototyped some nice card-flipping interaction to spice things up a bit.

Outcome

This was a fast and furious project. Meeting with team members from nearly every department to learn more about operations at the club and on the course was really fun. We iterated rapidly and were able to settle on a solution and release it to production in just four weeks!
